Nevada Governor Issues Proclamation in Support of Statewide GIS Day Activities
GIS Day was Wednesday, November 18, 2009
This year the Nevada Geographic Information Society encouraged all our members to reach out and participate in this year's GIS Day. On November 18, 2009 GIS practitioners and users around the world reached out to children and adults alike to provide an opportunity to learn more about the way Geographic Information Systems are changing our way of life.
This year marked the 11th year GIS Day has been celebrated as part of National Geographic's Geography Awareness Week - a week dedicated to the education and increased awareness of the importance role location plays in our lives. This year around the State of Nevada many agencies participated in GIS Day offering open houses, map displays and presentations to school age children K-12 and beyond. Agencies like the BLM, Washoe County, the City of Mesquite, Clark County, the City of Henderson and the City of Las Vegas are once again put together events for November 18, 2009. Additionally the Northern Nevada GIS Users Group hosted an open house featuring maps and speakers from multiple agencies that ran from November 9th thru November 20th.
We understand that everyone does not have the time or the resources to engage in, and stand The NGIS Board thanks all the practitioners, users and integrators that make the GIS related things we do here in the state occur. We look forward to hearing any kind of feedback on ways all of us, as NGIS members, can continue to help make a difference by standing behind events like GIS Day! Send photos and stories of success for posting on the website and for featuring in our quarterly newsletter Geospeak.
It is an exciting time as we head into the 11th year of taking part in this great event! We hope many NGIS members are able to continue to help get the word out about how valuable GIS is to the State and beyond.
Below is the Proclamation from the Governer of Nevada regarding the GIS day as well as a link to a short video on youtube regarding the GIS day.
