NBGM and USGS LIDAR Data Survey

Your input is needed.

At the recent Nevada State Mapping Advisory committee held in conjunction with the NGIS conference, Tom Sturm (USGS Geospatial Liaison, now retired) discussed the National Enhanced Elevation Assessment project and followed the meeting with a request for updates to his inventory of LiDAR and other high-resolution topo projects for Nevada. LiDAR imagery was also further discussed during the open discussion at the SMAC meeting with regard to its importance for various applications such as landslides, floods, and earthquakes.

Archiving Digital Geospatial Data

Archiving Digital Geospatial Data - Conference Plenary Session With Nevada State Archives and National Archives and Records Administration
May 9, Reno
The expansion of GIS as a service depends, of course, on widespread, up-to-date geographic datasets. The volume of geographic data has grown exponentially during the last fifty years. These data are in digital form. How will future decades find, search, and gain access to the digital geospatial data of today (and yesterday, and the day before)? For instance, how will someone in 2020 (less than ten years from now) find and use spatial data from 2011 used for a planning decision? The plenary session of the 2011 NGIS Conference is a triad of panel discussions, with participation from the floor, on archiving digital geospatial data. We have convened the top scientists in the nation to participate in this session – the first of its kind for many years, but certainly not the last o this topic. Attend and participate!

GIS in the State of Nevada

Here in the State of Nevada we have been fortunate to have some very strong GIS pioneers and leaders that have established the foundation for where the Silver State is today with GIS. For more than 20 years, different parts of the state have been developing and making available datasets and tools for GIS analysis to both citizens and public and private organizations. Partnerships from Federal, State and Local agencies, as well as the private sector, have also continued to carry the GIS torch in the State over the years.

Getting Involved with the Nevada Geographic Information Society

It is a great time to be working with such a powerful technology. It is the goal of NGIS to provide as much value as possible for those practitioners who tap into the toolset and make a difference in the State of Nevada. A major goal over the next few years will be to continue to reach out to practitioners across the state and beyond and provide additional opportunities to advance, and build on, the solid foundation already established.
